Fly Like an Eagle…

Winthrop 74, Notre Dame 64

Not an ACC team, but of regional interest.

Props to Winthrop for finally winning a first round NCAA game when it looked like they were going to fall victim to the CBS game-switch curse. Remember the UNCW – George Washington game in last year’s tournament? With the Eagles up by 20 with about 13 minutes left in the game, CBS switched WRAL to the Texas A&M Corpus Christi – Wisconsin game, triggering a 29-8 Notre Dame run. CBS switched back to the game at about the 8-minute mark with Winthrop clinging to a ten point led. Notre Dame eventually took a 63-62 led, but the Eagles outscored the Irish 12-1 in the final 2:21 to advance.

The win was Winthrop’s first NCAA Tournament win in 6 tries. Last year, the Eagles lost their first round game to Tennessee on a last second shot.
