Why does the US Stink in International Basketball

US just finished 5th in the PanAm Games.

U.S. defeats Panama, finishes fifth at Pan Am Games

I know there are lots of reasons, including early exits to the NBA, a lot of kids not participating for other reasons, and the rest of the world getting a lot better. But I sure do miss the days when we could at least count on competing for the gold. This team should be good, right?

They were: Roy Hibbert (Georgetown), Wayne Ellington (North Carolina), Shan Foster (Vanderbilt), Kyle Weaver and Derrick Low (Washington State), Eric Maynor (VCU), Bryce Taylor and Maarty Leunen (Oregon), Josh Carter (Texas A&M), D.J. White (Indiana), Drew Neitzel (Michigan State), Scottie Reynolds (Villanova), James Gist (Maryland) and Joey Dorsey (Memphis).

Then again, where are guys like Greg Odom, the Florida crowd, etc? Too much money on the line to take a chance I guess.
